VICTORY! Lions beat DePaul Prep
The two-game winning streak with which the Leo Lions closed out the regular season moved them into the Prep Bowl playoffs, which they will open with a first-round rematch against St. Joe’s at St. Rita High School field on Thursday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is at 7p.m. The winner will face the highest-seeded Catholic League team making the earliest exit from the IHSA playoffs, date, site and time to be determined.
Leo (3-6 overall, 2-1 Catholic League Red) achieved its highest point total of the year in the regular-season finale, running away from DePaul Prep 47-12 on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Kroc Center. Senior running back Stephon Howard gained a career-high 193 yards on 22 carries and scored twice, on touchdown runs of 8 and 10 yards. Junior quarterback Darryl Ousley threw two TD passes to Keyshawn Johnson and ran for two scores, and sophomore running back Tobias Sample had 74 yards on just eight carries and scored on a 17-yard run.
Leo’s strong play in the Catholic League Red produced seven berths on the first all-conference team, including junior defensive tackle Gabrell Spruill, who was named Defensive Player of the Year. Howard joined him on the first team, along with Douglas, center Jalen Robinson, linebacker John Harris and two-way linemen Kenny Taggart and Gregory Coleman. Wide receiver DeJon Harris, running back Antoine Wheeler, linebackers Jokon Cousett and Cassius Kurns and tackle Elijah Lampty made second team.
“It’s great to see the guys recognized for all the hard work they put in,” Coach Mike Holmes said. “And now we’ve got a chance to extend the season.”
St. Joe’s is 3-6, 1-2. The Lions defeated the Chargers 27-21 when the teams met at Elmhurst College on Friday, Oct. 13.
