VICTORY! Lions beat St. Joseph
Keyshaun Douglas, Stephon Howard and some of their classmates got a one-week jump on Senior Day, and in doing so they helped the Leo Lions end their six-game losing streak.
Senior Day is Saturday, Oct. 21, against DePaul Prep at the Kroc Center. But the celebration started on Friday, Oct. 13 as the Lions used a succession of big plays to defeat St. Joseph’s 27-21 at Elmhurst College, improving to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the Catholic League Red Division.
Douglas opened the scoring for Leo when he hauled in a 45-yard TD pass from Darryl Ousley. He finished with four catches for 129 yards and added a second touchdown on a 78-yard kick return off a reverse.
Sophomore Tobias Sample scored on a nine-yard run, and junior linebacker Jokon Cousett brought an interception back 82 yards for the fourth Leo TD. The Lions also scored on a safety when an errant St. Joe’s punt snap sailed out of the end zone.
With fellow senior Antoine Wheeler sidelined by a knee injury, Howard was the workhorse of the Lions’ running game, finishing with 104 yards on 19 carries. Ousley completed six of 10 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Linemen Greg Coleman and Kenny Taggert and linebacker John Harris made life difficult for St. Joe’s quarterbacks all evening. Leo had two touchdowns called back for penalties and lost a fumble deep in St. Joe’s territory, but the Lions still established a season high for points in a game.
“The last six weeks hadn’t been easy for us, but the kids came out with a lot of heart and played well,” Coach Mike Holmes said. “I was really proud of the effort.”
DePaul Prep, Leo’s Senior Day opponent, is 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the Catholic League Red. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Kroc Center, 119th and Loomis.
