Frequent bad weather and its own inexperience have dealt a 1-2 punch to the Leo baseball team, which had a 3-8 record as April gave way to May. But the showing was not unexpected in that Coach Mike Anderson committed to a youth movement that should pay dividends as freshmen like Evan Hill and P.J. Brown gain experience that will serve them well in years to come.
Freshmen or not, infielder Hill and outfielder/pitcher Brown have been among the Lions’ most consistent performers, along with catcher Jokon Cousett and pitcher/first baseman Jonathan Randle.
Meanwhile, the track team has also suffered some weather-related setbacks, but is rounding into form for both Catholic League and IHSA state competition.
Juniors Tobias Sample and Dorian Woods lead a typically strong group of sprinters, along with senior relay man Jalen Harris. Leo can probably count on points in the field events from senior Devin Flakes (long jump, triple jump) and senior Jalen Oliver (high jump).
The Chicago Catholic League meet will be held on Saturday, May 11 at Loyola Academy. The Class 1-A Sectional is at St. Rita on Thursday, May 16. The state meet will be held at O’Brien Field on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston from May 23-25.
