Although the varsity season ended at the sectional level, Leo will have some representation at the Class 2-A state tournament in Peoria thanks to Aamir Holmes.
Aamir, a sophomore and the son of Leo vice president/admissions director/football coach Michael Holmes, made 15 of 25 shots on Friday, March 6, to qualify for the IHSA three-point shooting contest in Peoria on March 13-14.
Competing before the Robeson 2-A Sectional title game, Aamir made seven of 15 three-pointers in the first round to finish in a three-way tie for third place. Only four shooters advance to Peoria, so the three who tied went to a 10-ball shootout to determine which two would qualify.
Shooting first, Aamir made three corner shots off his first five-ball rack, the moved to the other corner and drained all five to finish 8-for-10, earning a trip to Peoria.
Good shooting, Aamir. Congratulations.
