The Leo Lions are through to the IHSA Sectional finals for the first time since 2012 after an 87-41 trimming of Westminster Christian School in the semifinal round of the Class 1-A Elgin Sectional on Tuesday, March 1.
Leo will face Chicago Hope Academy, which defeated Rockford Christian Life 81-43 in Wednesday’s semifinal, for the Sectional title on Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The game is at Harvest Christian Academy, 1000 Randall Road, Elgin.
The winner moves on to the Class 1-A Supersectional against the winner of the Hanover Sectional at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m. Four Supersectional winners advance to the Class 1-A state tournament in Peoria March 11-12.
Leo spotted Westminster a 4-0 lead, then reeled off 13 straight points and was never challenged in raising its record to 21-8. Coach Shawn Frison had subs in the game before halftime and for most of the third and fourth quarters. Nine of the 13 Lions who played scored points, with Corielle Robinson (22) leading the way. Darius Branch and Chris Winters added 17 apiece, and Darias Oliver had 13, all in the first quarter.
